If you have recently ended a long term relationship or a marriage you may have some anger and resentment towards your ex. This is normal, but you should try to eliminate those negative feelings before you start dating again. For many people this is easier said than done but this is a necessary step you must take to increase your chances of having a successful relationship in the future.

Try to focus on all of your previous relationships and ask yourself how many of your ex's you feel resentful towards. Ask yourself how many of your ex partners may have feelings of anger and resentment towards you because of something you've done in the past. You should write down the names of these people and why you feel anger and resentment towards them and vice versa.

If you have been holding on to guilt about something you have done in the past in a particular relationship, wouldn't you feel relieved to let that burden go? You can decide whether or not you would like to get in contact with any of these people.

If you decide to get in contact with certain people you can let them know that you have forgiven them for what they have done to you in the past. Or you can also ask for forgiveness for anything you have done to any of your partners in the past. You should also acknowledge anything positive that came out of the relationship or anything the person did to make you feel special.

You should let the person know that you are trying to move on with your life and you are trying to make peace with them in an effort to put the past behind you so that's why you contacted them.

If you have no interest in contacting any of these people or if you are unable to get in contact with any of them because they have moved away or they have died. There are other ways you can apologize to them that will have significant meaning that will allow you to move on with your life.

You can write a detailed letter to the person apologizing to them or letting them know that you have forgiven them. Writing down your problems on a piece of paper is a therapeutic way of getting it out of your system, after you have written the letter you can burn it.

Once you have freed yourself of the burden that you have been carrying around, you will feel better about yourself. This is when you will know that you are ready to start a new relationship with someone. Because if you are unhappy you will not be able to make someone else happy.
